Why i created a Lab Shop

Back when my health was falling apart, I went to my doctor. I was scared there was something really wrong with me. I was freezing cold all of the time, my periods were every 10 days and they were very heavy,  with intense cramps and mood swings.  I had a sinus infection that lasted a year and a half that wouldn’t go away no matter what antibiotic I took or steroid I took and I eventually was on so many antibiotics that I developed an allergy to doxycycline.  In addition to all of this I was gaining weight at a rapid speed and it didn’t seem to matter what I did, it just wouldn’t stop.  I was exhausted all….the…..time…..  I had no energy to do things that I used to love, and I really couldn’t explain why.  I was also experiencing “issues” when eating certain foods and my approved foods list was getting smaller and smaller.

Knowing SOMETHING was wrong, but not being able to pin point it, I assumed I was approaching menopause and went to my gynecologist.  She ran blood work and told me what I have now learned is all too common- “your labs are in range” and dismissed my symptoms.  Because the labs were in range, there was no diagnostic code, therefore she was unable to help me.

Now I know I had tanked my endocrine system and I had no reserves left in my body to deal with any stressors at all.   And, my life is very stressful!  I have a very busy life with stressors that can’t be avoided including being a caretaker for my aunt, who has Alzheimer’s,  primary caretaker for my son who is a Type 1 diabetic and Autistic, mom, wife, friend, the list goes on.

Because I had no reserve left, I now began to feel like I had lost myself.  Seriously.  I began to wonder who I even was, and was there a point to my life?  This is a scary and dangerous place to be mentally, but I just didn’t have anything left to give anyone, and a seemingly never ending to do list and people who were counting on me.

I forgot about the most important person who was counting on me- ME!

I had to find answers.

As mothers, we often forget that self-care IS child-care!  Or as a wife, what do you have to give to your spouse if you have nothing?  Or as a friend, are you even participating in the friendship when you aren’t even really participating in your own life because you’re just too depleted to do so?

Here is what I tell my clients: Nothing and Everything is wrong with you.

Your doctor-run labs probably look normal. Your thyroid is normal, your hormones are normal, your blood work is normal.

But you’re like, nope.

So when the Lord led me to Functional Diagnostic Nutrition and a new world of functional lab testing opened up to me, I was blown away.

Finally, I was able to find some of the root causes of the weird things my body was doing. I learned the concept of Metabolic Chaos, which essentially says that when stress is too much for the body to handle, the body uses physical symptoms to get your attention.

Possibly the most important thing I learned is that when you have symptoms, you are already far down the path to dysfunction, because symptoms are actually at the end of the path of disease!  But so many doctors ignore the symptoms!!!

Really, the only way to find out the issues that are contributing to this Metabolic Chaos is to get your hands on tests like these.

My Favorite Lab Tests

The DUTCH is my number 1 favorite, hands down. I love the wide array of data that we can get off of a single piece of lab testing.

The GI Map gives us lots of answers to the weird and wonderful world of the gut. It’s easy to take at home.

The Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis is the very easiest test to take, and gives a lot of bang for your buck.

Having these labs gives you the knowledge, confidence and power to remove foods that cause inflammation in the body.

DUTCH Test

The DUTCH is my number 1 favorite, hands down. I love the wide array of data that we can get off of a single piece of lab testing.

The DUTCH is a urine test that you take at home, from the privacy of your own bathroom. It’s super easy. You’ll pee on a little strip of lab paper at 5 pm, 10 pm, in the middle of the night if you wake up, at 6 am, and at 8am. Then you put it all in an envelope and send that puppy in! It takes about 10 business days for me to get your lab results back, and then we will discuss in our client session.

These are things we can screen for on the DUTCH:

  • Why you’re depressed
  • Why you’re anxious
  • Why you can’t fall asleep
  • Why you can’t stay asleep
  • Why you have PMS
  • Why you have blood clots
  • Why your boobs hurt
  • Why you’re stressed constantly

We can look at estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol, DHEA, adrenaline, DNA stress, B vitamin status, and more. I’ve learned a lot of things about a lot of clients based off of this lab alone.

GI Map

The GI Map is a second very telling piece of information. This is the functional lab you wish your provider ran on you when you went in with the following symptoms:

  • bloating
  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • distension
  • possible SIBO
  • cramps and pain
  • weight loss resistance
  • gastroparesis
  • acid reflux

The GI Map gives us lots of answers to the weird and wonderful world of the gut. It’s easy to take at home. You poop in a tray, take a sample, and send the sample via FedEx to the lab. About 2 weeks later, we have your results and we get to work making your gut (and you) better

HTMA

The Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis is the very easiest test to take, and gives a lot of bang for your buck. You cut a tiny bit of hair, put it in an envelope, and send it through the mail. I get the results back in about 2 weeks, and then we will go over your test.

When I took this test myself, I was shocked. I learned that my best diet is one that is lower in fat and rich in complex carbohydrates…  I had been denying myself carbs in the name of losing weight (unsuccessfully, I might add) for some time!  I also learned that mineral imbalances were definitely contributing to my lack of energy, estrogen dominance, low mood and more.

Food Sensitivity Panel (MRT)

I love this test. Have I said that about the other tests? I guess I just love testing- like, the right kind of testing. The food sensitivity panel is the only test that is a little harder to take. You’ll have to get to a lab to get your blood drawn, but then you just take your sample and send out to the lab via FedEx. Easy!

The food sensitivity test can really move the needle for a lot of my clients. A lot of times, we eat foods we think are good for us. All of the books and blogs and instagram gurus say these foods are good for us. So we should eat them.

But.

What happens when those foods are causing inflammation in the body? That inflammation can lead to a whole host of symptoms like diarrhea, constipation, skin problems, brain fog, and period problems.

I, myself found that I was highly intolerant of soybean and tilapia and moderately intolerant to avocado, peanut, peppermint, corn, quinoa, rice, cumin, egg yolk, spinach, hops, kale, whey, shrimp, cottage cheese and lamb!  Here’s the REALLY cool part, though- these food intolerances often reduce as we bring the body back into alignment!  I learned that I needed to avoid these foods for a short time to help my body heal, but most likely not forever!  What a relief, right?

Having the labs gives you the knowledge and confidence and power to remove these foods from your diet and introduce a wide variety of new foods that can broaden your exposure to micronutrients. Each body is different, and I love finding the patterns of intolerance each body shows me on the MRT.

I'm ready to help you Regain Your Vitality

I hope this information helps you understand the labs I use in my practice, and how the data we get from these tests can really help move the needle in your health journey.
